VMware, a great way to test RunUO

Greetings,

I will take a quick little break to tell you about a new program I am using. This program is all the rage in the IT world, however, I have not taken the time to learn about it until recently. VMware - Virtual Machine Software.

VMware allows you to create "stand alone" PCs on one single computer. I know your first thought is WHY? My second thought was HOW SLOW!

Well to answer your first question WHY. Because you can. The first feature of VMware that I found quickly answered my WHY question. The feature call SNAPSHOT. It takes a picture of the virtual PC and save it. Then you can go in a completely mess up the VM. Once it gets too bad, click REVERT and tada your VM is clean again. I have begun to use this feature when trying to figure out the best way to install MONO and MONODEVELOP.

As for the SPEED, I have a P4 Dual Core, with 2g Ram. I have the VM setup as a P4 with 512m RAM. It runs very nice. Kept in mind it's running Kubuntu, with a Kubuntu VM. I also have Windows XP with 512m RAM, Smoothwall v3.0 and FreeNAS running as VM's.

On my other PC with a P4 HT with 1g Ram, it runs a bit slower, however, I have just XP running.

If you run VMwaree, which has an open source version, get as much RAM as you can.

Oh, and now on to the good stuff. Installing VMware was very easy. Instead of reposting the direction, just take a look at this site. www.ubuntugeek.com

If you get a chance to try it, let me know what you think!
